This Day is Bananas! B A N A N A S!

I have so much to say recently that my writing abilities shut down. Oddly, I started this so that even when I'd have too much to get down I'd be able to. So I'm going to free-write rant this one. Without going into detail, someone I know got suspended from school for a day for hurting another kid in his class' feelings. In addition to that, the kid with the hurt feelings punched another kid and gave him a bloody nose, but he wasn't even asked to apologize. Which is what the kid who hurt his feelings should have been asked to do instead of being suspended. Sounds ridiculous enough to not believe, doesn't it? But it is true. And I've been obsessed with this story since it happened because if the suspended kid wouldn't have parents as great as he has, I'd be giving him a few years before he learns how to add up the hypocrisies and goes "off the derech" as they say. What does it take to get qualified educators to run yeshivot? In addition to that, now the kid who punched the other kid knows that if anything happens to him, all he has to do is run to the Principal's office and tattle and the kid who hurt him will get into big, fat trouble. And no one likes a tattle-tale, so he'll be even less tolerable to his classmates than he was beforehand. Basically, this solution solved nothing at all and aggravated more than it should have. Speaking of tattlers, there's a certain unspoken alliance peers have and once someone goes to an authority figure and tells, they lose the respect and trust of the others. Which happened to me once and I'm still not really fully able to trust the girl who did it. Weird how trust works. Saturday night at about 3:30am, two cars crashed on my cousin's corner. We opened her roommate's window (I was using her roommate's bed) as far as we could and leaned out to see what had happened. There had been at least two people in each car and they were all shouting at each other. We felt bad for them and discussed calling the cops (they were seriously loud) but decided it wasn't necessary unless they started fighting and Zahava started to get off the bed but toppled down and fell off the bed on the side where her roommate keeps a stack of containers with hair accessories and such and it was hilarious, but she got very hurt. We sat on her bed with ice on her bump talking about the weekend when we heard, "Your ankle hurts? HURTS? YOU WALKED ALL THE WAY OVER HERE WITH IT HURTING? I WORK IN THE HOSPITAL AND I..."

I Was Wearing Rainboots

My cousin and I were going to do a slow night together. No groups of friends, movies, concerts, hikings, etc. Just us and nothing else. After dropping a friend off to go see a movie with other friends, we drove around midtown a bit to find a spot. We parked on one of those streets where the sidewalk is very skinny because there's construction going on and walked along the street. There was a big SUV on the side of the street, but not parked, so we had to walk around it. When we got to the other side, we were greeted by a very tall frat-boy who stood with his arms open out to the sides.
"Do you wanna dance?" he asked.
Obviously, we walked around him, grabbed each other's arms, and bursted out laughing.

It's Only When I Do Something that Comes Across Wrong that I Wish People Can Read Thoughts

I'm not going to jump to any conclusions, but it's very possible that the reason the little toe on my right foot is hurting so much is because it's broken. It might just be sprained or injured though, because I was able to wear shoes after all and that doesn't sound like something a broken toe would allow. And it wasn't because of my shoes. On Shabbos a folded chair that was leaning against the wall slid down and jammed itself very hard into my toe. I didn't really mind because Zahava bought button candy for Shabbos.
Wow, a friend just looked at some of my pictures from Purim and told me I looked like a 1950s zombie maid. He is so on.
I am now going to share an embarrassing story. Not because I come out of it a hero (I don't), but because it involves the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and anything that involves the TMNT needs to be mentioned. Our Shabbos meal consisted of 8 girls and I think 7 boys, but I can't remember exactly. Anyway, everyone knew everyone else and no one was being friendly, so Zahava and I ended up having our own private little conversations. Not because we were being unfriendly, but because no one cared to include us in the bigger conversation. Near the end of the meal, I heard someone mention Donatello and immediately perked up.
"Who likes Donatello anyway?" the guy was saying. "He's such a geek."
"I DO!" I shouted. (Sometimes, when overwhelmed by excitement, I shout. It was by mistake. It was also only part one of this embarrassing moment.)
"But he was just a geek who built things," the guy said.
What I should have said was "yes," or "and that's just my speed," or "I guess I have a thing for those who can apply mathematics." Any of those--any combinations of those--would have done. Instead, I looked him straight in the eye and did a come-hither "heeellooooo!" And, of course, my "heeellooooo!" came across as me hitting on him and not me explaining how I feel about Donatello and his building skills. As soon as it left my mouth, I continued staring at this guy (who had been sitting across from me the whole meal without introducing himself) in utter shock that I had done something so embarrassing. Seriously, he was not the guy I was thinking of when I did that. When I realized he was looking at me in surprise that I felt so strongly about him, I started laughing almost as hard as Zahava was at that point. And it was just as bad as I made it sound.

"You Can Call Me"

I woke up this morning in a panic that I had overslept and was late. I sat up in the tight and twisted sleeping bag my cousin lent me (which I had on top of an air mattress) and panicked. I was too sleepy to think about where I was or what time it was, but as I was unzipping the sleeping bag, I had a sense that something was wrong. Everyone was still sleeping. Didn't Zahava say her roommate wakes up at 5:46? 6:46? I checked my phone to find that it was only 4:26.
The next time I woke up, I jumped out of bed to wash up because my cousin had warned me that one of her roommates wakes up at 7:15 and she has a long morning ritual that extends to 7:30, so for those 15 minutes I won't be able to use the bathroom. While getting my stuff together, Zahava woke up to ask the time. 6:07, I told her. It wasn't until I was brushing my teeth that I realized it was 6:07 and not 7:07.
Another weird thing about last night is that my phone shows two missed calls in the 2am hour from different 914 numbers. The calls are three minutes apart and one of the callers left a message. The guy who left the message had an accent, so I can't tell if he's saying "Dina" or "Diyanna" but the message sounds like this: "Dina, it's the bus driver, I'm waiting here outside. You can call me."
